1000 Watt LED Grow Light Cost Per Month – An Ultimate Guide

(Last Updated On: August 9, 2021)

1000 Watt LED Grow Light Cost Per Month….

If you have read my previous blogs you would see I have mentioned it there before, if you read articles from other websites you might have also seen the same words there or you might have heard any self-sufficient farmer mention the fact. What exactly do we mean by that?

Well, LEDs are  powerful lights. In fact, it is more powerful than all other similar grow bulbs. 1000 watt LED grow light is equivalent to 1400 watt HPS light, and 1500 MH light. So one 1000w LED bulb gives you 400 watts more than HPS and 500 watts more than MH bulbs. So obviously in terms of usage LED gives you more utility.

1000 Watt LED Grow Light Cost Per Month

Since 1000 watt LED grow lights equivalent to other grow lights consume more power, it is natural that LED saves way more money here. So here I will discuss what a 1000 watt LED grow light costs per month and how much less it is than other bulbs. Because there are many other factors at play here too.

So there won’t be any cost?

Sorry to burst your happy bubble. This is a preposterous notion. Using LED grow lights for indoor plants just means that you will get less bill if you were using other bulbs of similar power output. And if you are making a large indoor garden with lots of light, you will still get handed down a check with several zeros.

1000 Watt LED Grow Light Cost Per Month

It is not a secret that LED grow lights are more efficient than other fluorescent and HPS/HID lights. 1000w led grow light has great coverage and equal illumination. It produces 200000 lumens, HPS 145000, and an MH bulb merely 100000 lumens. So it is safe to say the same power LED gives you much more utility.

Now before we move any further there are some terms you need to familiarize yourself with first.

WATT:  From the title, till now we have mentioned the word numerous times. So what is a watt? Well, a watt is the unit of power. It implies the rate at which electricity is produced by a device.

For instance, a 1000 wattage bulb consumes power at an amount of 1000 watts per hour. So, it does not insinuate that the grow light consumed 1000 units of electricity, it purports that per hour it will consume electricity at a rate of 1000 wattage.

KILO WATT: Similar to watt,  Kilowatt also refers to the unit of power. It is usually applied to large appliances that consume a lot of power i.e. a 6 kilowatts elevator, a 1.5 kW air conditioner. Kilowatt is written as KW in mathematical formulas.

However, there are also bigger units to calculate i.e.  Megawatt (MW), Gigawatt (GW). They are used to describe large power generation. For example 100 Megawatt (MW) nuclear power plants. 1000 watts makes 1 kilowatt.

KWH = You must have seen this term on your electricity bill. This unit indicates how much your devices have consumed per hour hence the name kilowatt per hour.  To calculate the amount you simply have to multiply your daily usage amount with the device’s power consumption.

Suppose you have a 20 watt LED bulb that runs for 12 hours daily. So it will consume 20 watts x 12 hours = 240 watt hours = .0240 KWH.  1 unit of electricity means 1 kWh of electricity consumption.

ELECTRICITY TARIFF– Electricity tariff is the sum total the electricity provider demands from you per kWh of electricity. That is to say, it is not the total bill. It is merely the amount of one unit electricity cost. In the USA per unit residential electricity cost is 13.31 cents ( 0.1231 dollars). If you live in another country then simply google to find out the amount. Or you can just calculate it by dividing the total bill by monthly power consumption and wah-la you got your tariff charge.

So now the question arises,  how many watts does a 1000 watt led grow light use?

It is not really that hard. Like we have said before just multiply the Light’s power with the daily usage amount and you will get kilowatt hour. This is your LED bulb’s consumption rate. Applying this method you can even calculate the monthly or yearly consumption amount.

Let us do that here.

1000 watt LED light Daily Consumption rate if it run for 12 hours :

1000w x 12h = 12000 watt hour = 12 kilowatt hour  ( 1 kilowatt = 1000 watt).

1000 watt LED light monthly consumption rate if it ran 12 hours daily :

If the daily consumption amount is 12 kWh then monthly it is, 12 KWH x 30 = 360 KWH

1000 watt LED light yearly consumption rate if it ran for 12 hours daily :

In 12 months the light consumes about, 370 KWH x 12 = 4320 KWH

Consumption Comparison with HPS and MH light

Like I have mentioned at the start, 1000w LEDs are more efficient than 1000w HPS lights and Metal Halide lights. And 1000 LED grow lights are equivalent to 1400 HPS and 1500 MH. So naturally, they consume more power than LED lights.

So, a 1000 watt equivalent HPS bulb consumes if it ran 12 hours  daily:

1400 watt x 12 h = 16800 watt hour = 16.8 kilowatt hour

A 1500 Metal halide grow light will daily  consume it ran for 12 hours:

1500 watt x 12 h = 18000 watt hour = 18 kilowatt.

So, in conclusion, LED grow lights consume 2.8 units less than HPS and 6 units less than MH grow lights.

1000 Watt LED Grow Light Electric Bill

1000 Watt LED Grow Light Electric Bill

Calculating how much electricity a 1000 watt LED grow light use is not that hard. The toughest part is to collect all the necessary information. But that won’t be an issue here actually. Because we have all that covered already. You’ll see.

So do find out the LED grow light monthly operating cost, you just need two pieces of crucial information

  • First, the wattage of the light
  • Second, how long it will run per day.

We already know the wattage of the light. We are working with a 1000 wattage light. And you should already have an idea about the hours you would use the lamps. But in case you don’t, or you just want to know the light operating cost before spending on it then let me give you a little info.

Generally to grow most plants you need to keep your lights running for 12 hours in the flowering stage and 18 hours during harvest. In both cases, the mathematical equation is the same. You just need to change the number. So let’s do the math within 18 hours.

Before finding out the actual electricity bill, you need to determine the Kilowatt per hour. We have already done it before so it shouldn’t be that hard to find out.

So here you have a 1000 wattage LED grow light that you are running for 18 hours. So the watt hour will be= 18 x 1000= 18000

And so the kilowatt is = 18000/1000 = 18 KWH ( 1 kilowatt is 1000 watts)

Now that we have the daily unit or KWH, all we have to do is multiply it with your electricity tariff to figure out the cents per kilowatt hour ( price)  and then multiply it by 30 to get the power bill per month. We already covered that the electricity price in the USA is per unit 13.31 cents.

So daily cost is = 18 x 13.31 = 239.58 cents or 2.40 dollars ( 1 dollars is equivalent to 100 cents)

So in per month a 1000 watt led grow light electric bill  is = 2.40 x 30 = 72 dollars

Per Month Electricity Cost Comparison with Other Grow Lights

So let’s find out about the 1000 watt LED equivalent HPS and MH grow light bill per month so that you can get a clear idea of how much you will be saving by using these.

So 1400 watt high pressure sodium light per day consumption : 18 x 1400 = 25200 watt hour= 25.2 kilowatt hour.

So daily bill= 25.2 x 13.31 = 335 cents 3.35 dollars.

So the monthly bill of a HPS bulb  is = 3.35 x 30 = 101 dollars.

1500 Metal Halide light per day consumption = 1500 x 18= 27000 watt hour= 27 kilowatt hour.

MH bulb lyper day electricity cost= 27 x 13.31= 359 cents = 3.60 dollars

Per month electricity bill = 108 dollars.

So on a clear margin LED lights are the budget friendly ones. A single 1000 watt led grow light cost per month is 72 dollars. Whereas other HID lights cost you more than 100. Safe to say you are saving a lot.

Other Important Factors

There are other reasons why LEDs are cost effective bulbs. It has more lifespan and heat protection. These traits contribute to your money saving factor. Confused how all these are reverent here?

Well, let me explain.

Less heat production amounts to that you won’t have to put in so much effort to constantly keep your indoor gardening room’s temperature cool. You won’t need to spend so much to purchase a lofty amount of ventilation equipment.  And you will certainly need extra electricity to power that equipment. So no extra equipment means no extra cost on it or the electricity bill from it.

During the summer, High pressure grow lights require a well invested air conditioning system. By using an LED light, you won’t need that at all since these types of lights produce little to no heat. So quite the money saving option if you ask me.

Then again most cost savings in the LED grow lights come courtesy of their long lifespan. These types of indoor gardening bulbs last much longer than HPS or Mh lights, and even the highly regarded fluorescent lights. So this means that you won’t have to change bulbs every other month of the year.

Premium quality Metal halide and High-pressure sodium lights can be quite expensive. So the amount you can liberate from not having to purchase new bulbs really piles on.

Additionally, LED grow lights not only save your cash but also make your money. A big trump card of using LED light is that you can get the precise spectrum you want.  The world class bulb manufacturing companies have designed their lamps with the ideal spectrum for plant growth.

So it means that your investment won’t go to waste. You are not sponsoring electricity bills for any bulb that your plants may ignore. Furthermore, it means that your harvest will be upgraded, both in terms of quality, size, and taste. More quality and tasteful crops pick up a higher price. And if you are growing them for just your family then it means more nutrition. And obviously, a sizable yield will inevitably get you more money if you decide to sell it.

The key here is to get the premium LED lights that have just the right sort of spectrum and efficiency.

Most Asked Question

1.How much does it cost to leave lights on 24 7?

If you use a 1000 watt LED 24/7 then the daily cost is 3.19 dollars and monthly 96 dollars.

Daily consumption if you leave it on for 24 hours= 1000 x 24= 2400 watt hours or 24 kilowatt hours. So the daily cost is 24 x 13.31= 319.44 cents or 3.19 dollars. So the monthly bill will be 3.19 x 30 = 96 dollars.

2. Are LED lights cheaper to run?

Yes, LED lights are cheaper to run than HID and HPS.

3. Is switching to LED lights worth it?

Switching to LED lights are totally worth it. It is effective, covers a vast ground, lasts longer than other light and of course costs much less than HPS, MH, and fluorescent lights.

4. Do LED bulbs make your electricity bill high?

No, LED lights are budget friendly and generate fewer bills than other grow lights.

5. Do LED lights attract bugs?

No, absolutely not. Bugs can only see three colors of lights. UV, green and blue. Since LEDs have different spectrums so any other color lights won’t attract bugs and since bugs are drawn to the warmth and LED lights are generally cold, bugs don’t tend to hang around this light.

As powerful and effective as LED bulbs are, they are also cost effective. A 1000 watt led grow light cost per month is relatively low. Which makes it all the more attractive. Choosing the right bulb is also important here. A premium bulb will give you the utmost utility. So choosing or replacing your garden lights with LED is truly a legit investment.
